Some assignments go beyond the usual scope of logistics. Working inside the crypt of Chartres Cathedral, one of the jewels of the UNESCO World Heritage list, to move a valuable work in a setting as exceptional as it is demanding: that is what the ESI Fine Art teams achieved.
A rare operation, carried out with the absolute rigour and precision called for both by the intrinsic value of the work and by the irreplaceable nature of the building that houses it.
Technical constraints beyond the ordinary
The crypt of a Gothic cathedral is not an ordinary workplace. Confined spaces, severely restricted access, limited headroom, listed floors and structures: every parameter was studied beforehand in order to design a bespoke method of intervention, matched to conditions that standard equipment and methods cannot address.
Faced with those constraints, our teams deployed a lifting gantry sized specifically for the crypt, making it possible to control every movement to the millimetre. Protection and blocking systems were designed and put in place to preserve the structures and floors of the site intact throughout the operation: no compromise is acceptable when working in a monument of this importance.
Every movement was subject to constant monitoring, with real-time coordination between all the specialists present on site, to guarantee the safety of the work at every moment.
An operation that calls on all our expertise
This kind of operation cannot be improvised. Ahead of the intervention, our teams carried out a full technical survey of the site: access measurements, study of the structural constraints, selection of suitable equipment and precise planning of each phase. On site, it was the synergy between our different trades, specialist handlers, lifting engineers and heritage technicians, that made the success of this assignment possible.
The packing and blocking of the works were designed in line with the constraints of moving in a confined space, and the transport to and from the site was organised to the same standard as the operation itself.
The reference partner for exceptional venues
This assignment at Chartres illustrates what sets ESI Fine Art apart from generalist logistics providers: the ability to operate in environments with very high constraints, where the technical quality of the means deployed has to match the heritage value of the works as much as their artistic value.
For cultural institutions, curators, heritage architects and owners of exceptional works, our teams are a trusted partner, able to work where few others can, with the discretion, the rigour and the know-how that these places demand.
